Sleep in Heavenly Peace (SHP): is a national organization founded by CNN Hero, Luke Mickleson, with an active chapter right here in Hampton. Its objective is to build bunk beds and deliver them fully furnished and ready to be slept in to families who have children without their own beds. St. John’s has committed to provide funding for ten bunk beds to families on the Hampton SHP waiting list. A bed building event will be held on May 1 from 9am-2pm, or until the 30 beds are finished. It will be held at the Hampton Adult and Alternative Learning Center at 1646 Briarfield Rd. This is light work, sawing, drilling, sanding, assembling, but it does require standing. If you are interested in participating, contact Ed Austin (cell 757-897-5918, or email ten.xoc@nitsuadrawde) by April 26.

St. Anne’s Guild update: First, a big thank you to all who came out to St John’s in support of the Team Up 2 Clean Up on Saturday, March 27! In about two hours, 12 of us gathered a total of 11 bags of trash, all of which were picked up that afternoon by Hampton Clean City Commission. We were able to cover the block of Franklin St to W Queen’s Way, to Kings Way to Lincoln, and all the areas contained inside. That activity was quickly followed by our Easter Card mission where a small team sent cards to over 30 of our more senior/less active members just to let them know we were thinking of them during this Easter season. I hope they were joyously surprised. We hosted Christy Everett, the Hampton Roads Director of the Chesapeake Bay Foundation at our April 6 virtual meeting. She gave us an informative update on CBF activities in our area and was able to talk about the status of other states’ work to clean up the Bay. She also promised a personal guided tour of the new Brock Center once it is open to the public, most likely in the fall. According to Christy, the best thing we as individuals can do is write to our local representatives regarding environmental concerns, while advocating for the funding of specific projects. The 50th anniversary of Earth Day, marking the occasion of the birth of the modern environmental movement, is on 22 April. The theme for this year is Restore the Earth. While it seems a daunting task, St. John’s is clearly committed to doing our part. In fact, we are looking at another activity on Saturday, June 5 with Clean the Bay Day. Details to follow once registration opens on April 30. Our next virtual meeting is scheduled for May 4 at 10:30am. We will be hearing from Matthew Stearn, Executive Director of H.E.L.P. If you are not at St. Anne’s member and would like a link to the meeting, just email Linda McMahon at moc.liamg@nwodhsalps.adnil.
