Academy of Music

The St. John’s Academy of Music began in the fall of 2018 as a partnership with the Academy of Music of Virginia based in Norfolk. The mission of both organizations is to offer music and drama enrichment in the lives of our community through private music instruction, group ensemble experiences and drama opportunities. These programs are staffed by selected professional musicians known for their expertise in teaching and performing, and registration to these programs is open to all residents regardless of the ability to pay.

Lessons

Offering Private and Group Instruction

The St. John’s Academy of Music began in the fall of 2018 as a partnership with the Academy of Music of Virginia based in Norfolk. The mission of both organizations is to offer music and drama enrichment in the lives of our community through private music instruction, group ensemble experiences and drama opportunities. These programs are staffed by selected professional musicians known for their expertise in teaching and performing, and registration to these programs is open to all residents regardless of the ability to pay.

The St. John’s Academy offers individual instruction in piano, guitar, voice and violin and lessons are arranged between student and teacher and taught in the upstairs studios of the Hoffman House beside the St John’s church building, 120 W. Queens Way.

To register for private lesson please go to the website for the Academy of Music and choose the Peninsula location. On the registration form indicate which instrument you wish to study and a teacher from our academy will contact you and arrange lesson times. Prices for individual lessons are found on the Academy of Music website for those who are able to pay. Scholarships are available. Please indicate if this is needed on the registration form.

In addition to this individual instruction St John’s Music Academy is also offering three exciting group ensembles.

Preschool Choir

This group meets weekly at St. John’s Parish Hall on Tuesday mornings from 10:30-11:00 and is open to young singers 3-5 years old accompanied by their parent or guardian. Each of the 10 week sessions will offer fun songs about growing, counting, making friends, moving in rhythm, and playing rhythm instruments. This early instruction helps young singers learn to follow directions, master impulse control and have a positive experience with music. The instructional fee of $5.00 per class is payable at the door for those who are able to pay. Class size is limited so register now.

Bucket Band Ensemble

Open to Middle School and High School students in Hampton. This group ensemble learns beginning through advanced rhythm patterns, drum technic and drum corp literature. Creating music with drumsticks on upside down 5 gallon buckets in complicated rhythm patterns can be fun and can win bucket band competitions! We need you to sign up and show your stuff!! Rehearsals are weekly on Monday afternoon 5:00-6:00 for 10 sessions at St Johns Parish Hall. Instructional cost is $5.00 per class for those who are able to pay. Buckets and drumsticks provided. Class size is limited so register now!

Show Choir

Open to elementary age dancers. This group ensemble on Wednesday afternoons 5:15 – 6:00. The ensemble learns many forms of dancing with popular music accompaniment. Learning to memorize dance patterns and choreography allows the mind to sharpen and strengthens focus while experiencing great and fun exercise. $5.00 per class for those able to pay.
