After the church service on Sunday, June 30th, an update on the church renovation was provided during breakfast in the Parish Hall. Approximately 45 parishioners attended and learned the following:
Architectural/engineering drawings were submitted by the contractor, Virtexco Corp., to the City of Hampton in early June for the permitting process.
A building permit was received in late June without any permit review comments.
Construction is currently slated to begin in mid-July. At that time, the north entry will be closed for the duration of the six month construction period.
The contractor has already been working off-site for about 30 days to prepare/distribute shop drawings and submittals for architect/engineer review and approval, hire subcontractors, order materials, and prepare a construction schedule.
Prior to construction, a meeting will be held with Virtexco, church representatives and Q-DESIGN to discuss the schedule, process, etc.
Arrangements have already been made to (1) relocate the sacristy functions to the parish hall, (2) protect the organ during dusty construction periods, and (3) provide alternative handicapped access during church/wedding/funeral services.
Funding will primarily be provided through a loan from Old Point National Bank and paid by The Mary Williams Trust (principal payments) and St. John’s Endowment fund (interest payments).
A renovation fund will also be established for incidentals such as furnishings, stained glass, artwork, landscaping, etc.
