A Place to Belong
Whether you’re returning to church after time away, exploring faith for the first time, or simply looking for a new spiritual home, St. John’s is a place where all are truly welcome. Our doors — and our table — are open.
We are a liturgical Episcopal parish rooted in the Book of Common Prayer. Our worship is formal but warm, ancient but alive. Most visitors find they feel at home quickly, especially with an usher nearby to help.

Sunday Services
We gather every Sunday for prayer, the Word, and the Sacrament.
Sunday 9 a.m.
Holy Eucharist
About an hour, without the choir. We follow Rite II, the contemporary language of the 1979 Book of Common Prayer, and Rite I, its traditional language, in Advent and Lent.

Children’s Christian Formation
Sunday school for children in 2nd through 5th grade runs during the 10 o’clock hour, September through May, using the Spark Lectionary curriculum.

Holy Eucharist
Our principal Sunday service, about an hour, with anthems sung by our choir. This is a great first service for visitors — rich music, warm community, and a festive celebration of the Eucharist. Also livestreamed weekly.

A Warm Welcome
Friendly ushers will greet you at the entrance, offer a bulletin, and help you find a comfortable seat. Don’t hesitate to ask any questions.
Guided by the Bulletin
The service bulletin contains everything you need to follow along — page numbers, responses, and hymns. You’ll never feel lost.
Sacred Music
Music is central to worship at St. John’s. Our choir, organist, and congregation sing together in a tradition going back centuries. Even newcomers find it moving.
Holy Communion
All baptized Christians are invited to receive the Eucharist. If you prefer, you may come forward for a blessing — simply cross your arms over your chest.

St. John’s Church is located in the heart of downtown Hampton, Virginia, just steps from the waterfront. We are easily accessible from I-64 and local roads.

Parking
We have parking available all around the church, with handicap parking located near the entrance of the church building.
Arrive Early
We recommend arriving 10–15 minutes before the service so you can park, receive a bulletin, and settle in before worship begins.
Accessibility
All of our buildings are wheelchair accessible, and we have hearing aid devices in the sanctuary. We work with the Faith Inclusion Network to keep growing in accessibility — if there is anything you need, please let us know.
Families & Children
Raising Faith Together
Children are full members of this community, not just future ones. We welcome the energy and wonder children bring to worship. Families with young children are encouraged to sit wherever they feel comfortable — there are no wrong seats.
Nursery Care
We have a nursery in the parish house for ages five and below, staffed by background-checked paid staff, open for all Sunday services and Christian Education classes.
Children’s Formation
Sunday school, for 2nd through 5th grade, meets Sunday mornings at 10 a.m. in the parish house, on the second floor of the Sunday school wing, September through May.
Activity Bags
Activity bags are available in every vestibule for children who stay in the service. There is something for children at every service — children’s chapel or a children’s sermon from our clergy.
Common Questions
Before You Arrive
Do I need to dress formally?
Please come as you are. You’ll find everything from casual attire to suits in the pews. What matters is that you’re here.
Do I need to register or let anyone know I’m coming?
Not at all — just show up! You’re always welcome to drop in. That said, feel free to contact us in advance if you have specific questions or needs.
How long does the service last?
Both Sunday services last about an hour.
During the Service
Will I know what to do during the service?
Yes. The bulletin walks you through the entire service step by step with page numbers and instructions. Ushers are happy to answer questions before and after the service.
Can I receive Communion?
All baptized Christians are warmly invited to receive Communion, regardless of denomination. If you are not baptized or prefer not to receive, please come forward with your arms crossed over your chest for a blessing.
Is there an offering? Am I expected to give?
An offering plate is passed during the service. No one is expected to give. Giving is an act of worship for members of the community, and gifts support our mission.
After the Service
Is there coffee hour or a chance to meet people?
Yes! Fellowship hour with coffee and light refreshments is usually held after the second Sunday service in the Parish Hall. It’s a wonderful opportunity to meet members of the community.
