The regular meeting of the vestry of St. John’s Church, Elizabeth City Parish, Hampton, VA was held on May 8, 2001 at the parish house. The meeting was called to order by Frank Edgar, Senior Warden. Guests: Search Committee members James H. Tormey, Chairman, Elaine Holt, Vice Chair, Joseph S. Strup, M. Ann Ward, J. H. Hogg, Patricia Vermillion, Richard Harman, and John Eidam, Consultant.
Newly elected vestry members present: Bill Mace, W. L. (Bill) Terrill, William (Eric) Stewart, Connie Heath, Bettyrene Pope. Regular Vestry members present were Marian Blount, Frank Edgar, Sr., Billie Einselen, Bob Harper, Hansi Haufler, Richard Hayes, Linda Lashley, Vestal Lewis, Mary Ellen Sawyer, Nelson T. Durden, Leo Vaisvil, and Lew Vermillion.
Absent: Keith Hatch. Dan Clark, Also absent: P. Warren Spratley, Jr., Treasurer and Marni Schneider, Interim Rector.
James H. Tormey, Chairman of the Search Committee, described the search process and gave the Search Committee final report. There was very lengthy discussion. John Eidam made several comments about what the vestry needs to do to prepare for the vestry’s interview with the candidate recommended by the Search Committee.
A motion was made, seconded, and passed that persons who are going off the vestry this year be permitted to be voting participants in the next step of the search process. There will be a called special meeting of the vestry on May 15th, 2001 at 7:00 PM at the parish house. The purpose of the meeting will be to meet with John Eidam, Search Committee Consultant, to discuss how to conduct the interview with the candidate.
The minutes of the regular April 2001 Vestry meeting were approved as mailed.
The Senior Warden gave the Treasurer’s report. See Attachment. The Junior Warden gave no report.
Senior Warden – Mr. Edgar reported that the Rev. Betty Long will assist St. John’s in our visitation program for ten hours a week and we should let the church office know if we know of anyone who should be visited. He then reported that the Interim Rector will be back on May 15th, 2001, and he distributed a schedule of upcoming events (see attachment) which was explained and discussed.
Good of the Order: There was a general discussion about the state of St. John’s Episcopal Church. The sale of St. John’s hats was a success. Richard Hayes said he found Cursillo to be very spiritually uplifting and emotional. Bob Harper then stated that the past year has been an interim period under the leadership of Frank Edgar, Senior Warden, and because of his leadership St. John’s is ready to call a rector. An appreciation by all present was also extended to Lew Vermillion, Junior Warden, for his efforts on behalf of St. John’s.
