The regular meeting of the vestry of St. John’s Church, Elizabeth City Parish, Hampton, VA was held on April 10, 2001 at the parish house. The meeting was called to order by Rev. Marni Schneider, Interim Rector, at 7:00PM.
Devotions were led by Rev. Marni Schneider, Interim Rector. Those present were Dan Clark, Bob Harper, Hansi Haufler, Richard Hayes, Linda Lashley, Vestal Lewis, Mary Ellen Sawyer, Nelson T. Durden, Leo Vaisvil, and Lew Vermillion. Absent: Marian Blount, Frank Edgar, Sr., Billie Einselen, Keith Hatch. Also present: P. Warren Spratley, Jr., Treasurer Guest: John Eidam, Search Committee Consultant, who gave a brief update on the status of the search process, which is down to the final candidates, some of the which have been invited for an interview with the search committee. He also reported that the interviews will conclude in April of this year and the vestry should be given the name of the final candidate by the middle or end of May of this year.
The minutes of the regular March 2001 vestry meeting were approved as corrected.
The Treasurer’s report was given by P. Warren Spratley, Jr. who reported that there were still problems with the financial reports, but that St. John’s is hiring a new financial secretary this week and that should help the problem. The Income & Expense Report for St. John’s Episcopal Church for the period of March 1, 2001 to March 31, 2001, the Special Reports, the Hoffman House Report were all distributed and discussed. The Treasurer also stated that there was approximately $36,000.00 in the bank account at the end of March 2001. The Auditor’s Report for the year ending December 31, 1999 was also distributed and discussed.
The Outreach Commission report was given by Mary Ellen Sawyer. See attachment. A motion was made, seconded, and passed that the Easter 2001 offering be divided equally between Habitat for Humanity, Meals on Wheels and Downtown Hampton Daycare Center. A motion was also made that the Vestry accept the recommended disbursements of the Outreach Commission except for the disbursement to Youth Challenge. The motion was seconded, and passed. It was recommended that St. John’s wait until we get further information from Vestal Lewis about Youth Challenge before we approve that disbursal.
The Interim Rector who announced the Church activities for Easter week 2001 gave interim Rector’s Report. She also distributed and explained a letter from The Rt. Rev. David C. Bane Jr. in regard to the Consortium of Endowed Episcopal Churches (CEEP) presenting workshops in this area on Saturday, April 28, 2001. She then read a “thank you” letter from Hampton Ecumenical Lodgings & Provisions, Inc. thanking St. John’s for a $2,000.00 donation . She also advised the Vestry that she had sent funds from the discretionary fund to Jonathan in California for support of his ministry which is doing Angel messages and is called Just Heavenly. Lastly, the Interim Rector encouraged vestry members to ask people to run for the vestry at the vestry elections, which will be held at the Congregational Meeting the first Sunday in May, 2001.
Lew Vermillion, Junior Warden, who reported that there are termites in the Hoffman House, gave the Junior Warden Report. He also reported that the roof, air conditioning, and heating work at the Hoffman House has been completed and that the vacant office in the Hoffman House is being repaired.
Old Business – What is the status of the purchase of the Horseman Building? New Business – Richard and Peggy Hayes will host a covered dish supper on May 17th, 2001 at 6:00PM. Show Business – Marni Schneider is leaving for Hollywood, California for a 10-day visit.
Good of the Order- Linda Lashley will take a six-month sabbatical. The Wednesday night Lenten series was well done. Attached are notes from the Parish Action Committee (PAC) Meeting on April 3rd 2001.
