Vestry Meeting, March 18, 2014

Charles Edmonson, Senior Warden, called the vestry of St. John’s Episcopal Church, Elizabeth City Parish to order at 6:30pm other members present were Dan Clark, Junior Warden, Kay Olson, registrar, Kevin Eley Doug Miller, Valerie Bowen, Ann Templeman, Sylvia Edgar, Vestal Lewis, Clergy Reverend Samantha Vincent-Alexander. Also present were Frank Fortuna, Linda McMahon, and Carrie Quinn.

Samantha open the meeting with a reading of Psalm 121 and prayers of intersession.

Representing the newly formed Garden Guild Linda McMahon, Frank Fortuna and Carrie Quinn presented a plan to revitalize the “gardens” at St. John’s. There are grants available from Home Depot and from The World in Bloom website. The Guild will look into seeing if this project meets the qualifications. The goal of the Guild is to build a Master plan to begin to reestablish the St. John’s Garden Guild.

A motion was made by Doug Miller, seconded by Dan Clark to reestablish the St. John’s Garden Guild as a vestry committee. The motion passed.

The Garden Guild proposal is attached to these minutes.

The minutes of the February meeting were read and approved.

The Finance Report was approved as printed.

Vestry Officers for the year 2014 were nominated and elected as follows:

  • Charlie Edmonson Senior Warden
  • Dan Clark Junior Warden
  • Linda Curtis Treasurer
  • Kay Olson Registrar

Rector’s report: Samantha reported Bishop Hollarath requested a renewal of Ordination Vows, this will be on Wednesday April 16, 2014 at 10:00 AM in St. John’s Church.

The parochial report was due on March 1, Sylvia Edgar is working on getting the report in as soon as possible.

Vestry retreat will be on May 10, 2014 at TowneBank Building in Newport News.

Samantha presented some of the Logo’s St. John’s has used in the past and stated a Logo is to be the church’s “Brand”.

Kevin Eley made a motion to approve the Logo created for the 2010 400th Anniversary as our Logo, motion was seconded by Doug Miller, and the motion was approved.

Senior Warden: Charlie reminded the vestry the six (6) month Ministry Review for Samantha is due and will be conducted after Easter.

The Bishop’s day with vestry is March 27, all interested need to let him know tonight.

Finance Committee proposed structure as presented and approved by vestry on February 18 is as follows:

  • Three (3) year term:
    • David Bowen
    • Ruth Simmons
  • Two (2) year term:
    • Gwen Cumming
  • One (1) year term:
    • Bob Harper

There was no new Business.

Meeting was adjourned with prayer at 8:20pm.
