The regular meeting of the vestry of St. John’s Church, Elizabeth City Parish, Hampton, VA, was held on December 14, 1999. The Rev. Richard L. Vinson called the meeting to order at 7:05 PM and the registrar was present.
Those present were Letia Drewry, Billie Einselen, Frank Edgar, Connie Heath, Leo Vaisvil, Marian Blount, Vestal Lewis, Richard Hayes, Nancy Adams, and Treasurer, Warren Spratley. Also present was Beverly Gundry for the Church Museum.
Absent were Rick Harman, Jane Heiby, Dan Clark, Keith Hatch, and Lew Vermillion.
Vestal Lewis gave the devotions.
Review of Minutes and Agenda: The minutes ofNovember 9, 1999 were corrected and approved. The agenda was reviewed.
Request from Beverly Gundry – Museum artifact: Beverly reported that the Das Weserrenaissance Museum in Germany would like to borrow our 17th Century Weserware bowl June 17 – Oct. 3, 2000. This bowl was found on a dig of the 2nd Site and is unbroken. Beverly requested the vestry give her permission to investigate insurance and packaging details. The Weserrenaissance Museum would pay all expenses. It was moved that St. John’s lend the Weserware bowl to the Weserrenaissance Museum, providing a proper appraisal and shipping agreement is completed. The motion was seconded and approved.
Registrar’s Report: Correspondence was read.
Stewardship Report: 199 pledges of $330,211 have been received for the year 2000. Last year at this time 176 pledges of $295,000 had been received. This is an 11 % increase in both number of and amount of pledges. There is also $15,000 in new members pledges. Rick sent the Vestry’s appreciation to the Stewardship Committee.
Warden Reports: No report.
Search Committee Report: Jim Tormey spoke at both services last Sunday and the Search Committee prayer was said.
Interim Rector’s Report: Rick reported that the interim period is going well and that Night’s Welcome is being held at St. John’s. The upcoming Christmas season is a very busy time.
Treasurer’s Report: The bank balance, as ofDec. 13, 1999, was $18,515.58. $3,000 in prepaid pledges has been received. The Income and Expense Statement for the month of November 1999 and the Special Accounts Statements were reviewed.
Vestal Lewis reported that Joe Strop had the Charitable Trust checking account audited by Bill Boyer, Jr.
Other Business Use of Church for wedding/rental policy: A request for the Church to be rented by non-members was denied. It was moved and seconded that the Church not be rented. The motion passed.
New Copier: The new copier that is being leased will be installed on Jan. 15. The old one will be left until the new one is up and running, so there will be two copiers during the transition period.
Staff Bonus: It was moved and seconded that the clerical staff be given bonuses. The motion carried.
Budget – Diocesan Pledges: The proposed budget was handed out. The Finance Committee recommended the Diocesan Pledge be $69,100, a 2% increase over last year. A motion was made, seconded and carried that St. John’s Diocesan Pledge be $69,100. The salary for the Christian Education Director was discussed. It was moved that this salary be increased by 10%. The motion was seconded and approved, with one abstention. It was moved and seconded that the custodial staff receive a 4% increase and other employees receive a 5% increase. The motion passed, with one abstention.
Good of the Order: There will be an Evensong Concert on December 19.
