The regular meeting of the vestry of St. John’s Church, Elizabeth City Parish, Hampton, VA was held on June 12, 2001 at the parish house; the Rev. Marni Schneider, Interim Rector, presiding. The Interim Rector gave the devotions.
Regular Vestry members present were Marian Blount, Nelson T. Durden, Billie Einselen, Bob Harper, Hansi Haufler, Richard Hayes, Connie Heath, Linda Lashley, Vestal Lewis, Bill Mace, Bettyrene Pope, Mary Ellen Sawyer, and W. L. (Bill) Terrill.
Absent: Leo Vaisvil and Eric Stewart
Also present: P. Warren Spratley, Jr., Treasurer. Guests: Molly Durden, Co-chair 2010 Celebration Committee, Gwen Cumming, and Rick Harman, Chair of the Finance Committee.
The minutes of the regular May 8th, 2001 vestry meeting, the May 15th, 2001 special vestry meeting, the May 21st, 2001 special vestry meeting, and the May 30th, 2001 special vestry meeting were approved as corrected.
Gwen Cumming, on behalf of the Hampton History Museum, stated that the Museum would like to display St. John’s old historic communion silver at the Museum when it opens in 2002. The silver would be on loan by St. John’s Church to the Museum. A motion was made, seconded, and passed that St. John’s approve the concept of lending the communion silver to the Hampton History Museum for display when it opens in 2002 and that the executive committee of the vestry shall be responsible for working out the terms of the loan agreement subject to vestry approval.
Molly Durden made a presentation on behalf of the 2010 Celebration Committee and again distributed the time-line for the 400th Anniversary Celebration of St. John’s Church, which has previously been approved by the vestry. There were also comments and discussion on an architectural survey of existing buildings and on the purchase of the Horseman Building. A motion was made, seconded, and passed that St. John’s Church again offers $290,000.00 for the purchase of the Horseman Building. Rick Harman and Larry Cumming are to relay the offer to the owner.
The Treasurer’s report was given by the Treasurer, who reported a bank balance of $31,969.23 as of May 31st, 2001. The St. John’s Income & Expense Statement for the month ending May 31st, 2001, and special account reports were distributed and discussed. Rick Harman, Chairman, gave the Finance Committee report. The report dealt with the new Rector’s proposed compensation package and the report was distributed to the vestry. There was much discussion. A motion was then made, seconded, and passed that the vestry approve the Finance Committee’s recommendation for the new Rector’s proposed compensation package, and that the Executive Committee present the offer to the candidate for Rector.
P. Warren Spratley stated that he was retiring as Treasurer.
It was reported that The Rt. Rev. David C. Bane, Jr., Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Southern Virginia, has approved the call of the Rev. Keith Adams to be Rector of St. John’s Church, Hampton, VA and that a letter of call has been sent by St. John’s to Keith Adams.

Interim Rector’s Report. St. John’s needs to de-commission and thank the Search Committee and to thank the out-going vestry members. On July 24th, 2001 a dinner will be held for the Search Committee and the out-going vestry members.
A letter will be sent to the Parish from the Wardens announcing the call of the new Rector. There will be a vestry retreat on August 11th, 2001. A handout entitled “Getting off to a Good Start with your new Rector” was distributed. At the August, 2001 regular vestry meeting the appointments to Diocesan Council of Delegates and alternate delegates will be considered. The August, 2001 meeting will be held on August 14th at 7:00PM at the parish house.
Good of the Order: God’s speed and God’s protection to Linda Lashley and her husband on their sabbatical. Special recognition to Judy Moore for her participation in the Relay for Life, and to Connie Heath for the organizational work she did for the participation of St. John’s in the Relay for Life. The Jamestown Cross had St. John’s on the front page, and the Interim Rector was written up in the Norfolk Virginian Pilot. Closing Devotions -Interim Rector.
