The regular meeting of the vestry of St. John’s Church, Elizabeth City Parish, Hampton, VA was held on January 9, 2001 The Reverend Marni Schneider, Interim Rector, called the meeting to order at 7:00 PM. Rev. Marni Schneider gave devotions.
Those present were Dan Clark, Vestal Lewis, Frank Edgar, Sr., Leo Vaisvil, Billie Einselen Keith Hatch, Richard Hayes, Linda Lashley, Mary Ellen Sawyer, Nelson T. Durden, Lew Vermillion and Bob Harper. Absent: Marian Blount and Hansi Haufler. Also present: P. Warren Spratley, Jr., Treasurer Guest: The Reverend Donna-Mae Siderius.
The minutes of the December 2000 regular Vestry meeting were approved as corrected.
The Treasurer’s report was given by P. Warren Spratley, Jr. He reported that the bank balance was $50,379.93 as of 1/9/01; but that St. John’s had overpaid the Diocesan pledge by one month and this amount has been returned to St. John’s. He next reported on the salary and benefit items in the proposed budget for 2001 and he asked the Vestry to take action on these items, as budgeted, at this time. He also requested that the Vestry not consider approval of the full budget for 2001 until the regular February 2001 meeting.
A motion was made, seconded, and passed that the salary and benefit items in the proposed budget for 2001 be approved as budgeted. (See Attachment) (The salary for the Interim Rector is approved as set forth in the Letter of Agreement) (See Attachment). A discussion then followed about the cost of the new Parish House ramp. The Treasurer asked that the Vestry refer all such financial matters in the future to the Finance Committee first.
Search Committee: Keith Hatch reported that answers to the second letter to interested persons will not be considered until after January 15, 2001.
The Rev. Donna-Mae Siderius gave an in-depth presentation on the Five Development Tasks of the Interim Period between Installed Rectors. (See Attachment) There was much discussion and comment.
Interim Rector’s Report: The Rev. Marni Schneider reported that the J.W.W. Chisman Sr. Trust has given $500.00 to the Rector’s Discretionary Fund. She also reported that the delegates and alternates will remain the same for the upcoming Diocesan Council. She then reported that she will talk to Donna-Mae Siderius about the assistance of a Minister to help her. She suggested that the Parish should consider the preparation of a pictorial directory and a scrapbook of Parish members for the new Rector. Finally, she expressed a concern about the condition of the present vestments.
Senior Warden’s Report: Mr. Edgar reported that the total cost of constructing the new Parish House ramp was approximately $25,000.00 and that $21,750.00 has been raised so far; leaving a balance of approximately $4,000.00 to be raised. He will run an article in the Epistle asking for assistance to pay the balance of the cost of the ramp. Adjournment.
