The regular meeting of the vestry of St. John’s Church, Elizabeth City Parish, Hampton, VA, was held on January 11, 2000. The Rev. Richard L. Vinson called the meeting to order at 7: 00 PM and the registrar was present.
Those present were Letia Drewry, Billie Einselen, Frank Edgar, Connie Heath, Leo Vaisvil, Marian Blount, Vestal Lewis, Richard Hayes, Rick Harman, Dan Clark, Keith Hatch, Lew Vermillion, and Nancy Adams. Also present were Bill Mace and David Bishop, Cemetery Commission, and Molly and Nelson Durden and Trudy O’Reilly for the 201 O plans.
Absent was Jane Heiby.
Marian Blount gave the devotions.
Review of Minutes and Agenda: The minutes ofDecember 14, 1999 were corrected and approved. The agenda was reviewed.
Bill Mace presented the landscaping plans for the Church property commissioned by the Huntington Garden Club. The next step is to break down this plan into achievable parts. He has a detailed landscaping plan for the Columbarium. The Garden Club also gave a pictorial timeline of the life of St. John’s Church. Bill handed out the 1976 Rules to Govern for the Cemetery with a suggested amendment for “Operations” to be studied for future approval.
Molly and Nelson Durden and Trudy O’Reilly handed out a proposed time line and anticipated expense report for the 2010 Celebration. It was suggested that a capital campaign could be combined with the 2010 Campaign. Trudy had chaired the publicity for the 100 Anniversary Celebration at her former church in Dallas, Texas. A resolution naming Molly and Nelson Durden as co-chairs of the 2010 Celebration and specifying the scope of the committee was proposed, seconded and approved.
Registrar’s Report: Correspondence was read.
Warden’s Report: Lew Vermillion, Jr. Warden, reported the trim of the Church has been painted and the bricks on the tower on the west and south sides have been repointed and sprayed. The roofers will start their work next week. The placement of windows in the doors of the parish house is continuing.
There was no Senior Warden’s report.
Search Committee: No report.
Interim Rector’s Report: Rick reported that Jane Heiby’s husband Dave passed away and he sends his and the vestry’s sympathy to her. During Epiphany his Sunday School Class will focus on who we are and who we want to be through Bible stories. He is also exploring different ways of doing things; Rite 1 will be used during Lent and Rite 2 will be used during Easter.
Treasurer’s Report: The Income and Expense Statement for the month ending December, 1999 and the Special Accounts Report were handed out. The bank balance as of Jan. 4, 2000 was $47,973.00.
The proposed budget for the year 2000 was handed out. Warren Spratley wants the Finance Committee to review it for the general expenses and make recommendations. Rick Vinson wanted to specify that $17,000 of this salary was Housing and Utilities Allowance. A motion was made and seconded to approve this budget and allow the Finance Commission to make recommended changes. The motion passed.
Warren Spratley was nominated as a director of the Endowment Fund. The motion was seconded and approved.
Good of the Order: March 8 is Ash Wednesday and there will be a Pancake Supper and Follies the night before Shrove Tuesday. Lent classes will bJ held on Wednesday nights with a PotLuck Supper.
The concluding devotion was given.
