The regular meeting of the vestry of St. John’s Church, Elizabeth City Parish, Hampton, VA was held on October 12, 1999. The meeting was called to order by The Rev. Richard Vinson, and the registrar was present.
Those present were Rick Harman, Vestal Lewis, Billie Einselen, Connie Heath, Marian Blount, Keith Hatch, Jane Heiby, Richard Hayes, Lew Vermillion, Nancy Adams, Letia Drewry, Warren Spratley, and Rick Vinson.
Absent were Frank Edgar and Dan Clark.
The devotion was given by Keith Hatch.
Review of Minutes and Agenda
The minutes of the September 14, 1999 vestry meeting were approved, and the appointment of the Search Committee by the vestry was noted.
Added to the agenda was a resolution allowing Rick Vinson, Bill Mace, Warren Spratley, and Sylvia Edgar access to the church’s safe deposit box. The resolution was adopted.
Registrar’s Report
No report.
Treasurer’s Report
Warren Spratley, Treasurer, reported the bank balance is $20,272. Copies of the Income and Expense Report for September will be mailed. Reviewing the Special Accounts, Warren reported the Nickerson Fund increased by $2,300. The computer expenses and fee for John Eidam are to be paid from the Memorial Fund. The Diocesan pledge is due in December, and this was referred to the Finance Commission. The Finance Commission is soliciting budget requests from the staff, commissions, and the Vestry.
Warden’s Report
Letia Drewry, Senior Warden, reported she had received many compliments on the Search Committee diversity, and its representation of the different ministries at St. John’s.
Lew Vermillion, Jr. Warden, deferred his report to “Other Business”.
Interim Rector’s Report
Rick Vinson, Interim Rector, handed out literature on stewardship, Christian leadership, and attitudes about giving. The revised pledging form and sample pledge card were handed out. He requested the vestry members pledge before the Stewardship dinner on Nov. 3, 1999.
Other Business
Lew Vennillion reported there are two major leaks in the Church roof around the copper flashing and duct work from the air conditioning. L. C. Heath Roofing has estimated the repairs at $35,800. A motion was made that the Endowment Fund spend $35,800 on the roof repairs. The motion was seconded and approved. Lew also recommended the west and south walls of the tower be repointed while the scaffolding is in place and he will obtain an estimate for this work.
Vestal Lewis, on behalf of the Outreach Commission, moved that $1,000 be given to Em manual Episcopal Church, Franklin, VA, for repairs from the flooding and any needed outreach. This will come from the Charitable Trust. The motion was seconded and approved.
Nominations for Council Delegates were Jo-Ann Mahoney, Enna and Fred Bockoven, Bill Mace, Billie Einselen, Bill Rhode, Nancy Adams, and Letia Drewry. The Vestry will vote on delegates and alternates in November.
Rick Vinson requested Vestry members to be table hosts at the Stewardship dinner.
Good of the Order
The Search Committee is being commissioned on Oct. 31 at both the 8:00 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. services. The Vestry retreat is November 13. Direction signs are being installed in the Parish Hall for the bathrooms and classrooms. Outside signs for the Parish Hall were discussed and referred to the Property Maintenance Commission.
Rick Vinson stated there are two doors with “crash bars” that don’t work and are being dead bolted. The crash bars need to be repaired.
The next Vestry meeting is the eve of the Bazaar, so the meeting will not be on the stage.
