The vestry of St. John’s Episcopal Church, Elizabeth City Parish, was called to order on May 16, 2023, at 6:30 p.m. Present were: Senior Warden Bill Beach, Junior Warden Jay Hogg, Treasurer Linda Curtis, Registrar Lynn Kirkland, Anne Abraham, Darden Barrett, Ron Kindley, Brad Norris and The Reverend Samantha Vincent-Alexander. Absent: Jim Klotz, Elizabeth Zimmerman and The Reverend Mark Riley
The meeting opened at 6:30 p.m. with a reading from Acts 1:6-12
Treasurer’s Report, Linda Curtis
Linda presented the April budget, see attached. The Endowment Committee agreed to give us $80,000.00 with the first payment of $40,000.00 already received. The second payment will be provided sometime late summer. A new line has been added under Revenues, Other Income, Interest Income.
Approval of Minutes
April Minutes were approved with two corrections: 2023 was listed twice for the date in the first sentence and Assistant Rector’s Report should read Associate Rector’s Report.
Rector’s Report, The Reverend Samantha Vincent-Alexander
- New Person Needed for the Endowment – A recommendation to add Anne Rutherford to the Endowment Committee was made. A motion was made by Jay Hogg to nominate Anne Rutherford to the Endowment Committee and seconded by Ron Kindley. The motion was approved unanimously.
- Nursery Person Hired – Whitney started working in the nursery on May 7, 2023. She is currently in the Air Force.
- Summer Service Time – There will be one service during July and August at 9:00 a.m.
- Come and See Follow Up –
- Bill will speak with Dan about usher training.
- Business cards will be obtained from Vista Print and will have a picture of the church on one side
- Jay and Darden will check into yard signs.
- Name tags are in the pews
- Newcomer packets and website have been updated
- Anne is working on the follow-up card
- Racial Healing – Racial Healing workshops are available to raise awareness.
- Vestry Retreat – The Vestry Retreat is scheduled for September 9-10, 2023 at Chanco.

Warden Reports
- Senior Warden, Bill Beach – No reports at this time
- Junior Warden, Jay Hogg –
- The contract for the kneelers has been signed and the work will take place this summer. It is possible that two Sunday services could be impacted.
- While the kneelers are out it would be a great time to have the wood floors repaired and refinished. We have a quote from Smith Brothers but would like to obtain another quote from Jim Creech and ask the Mary Williams Fund to cover the expense. A motion was made by Jay Hogg to ask the Mary Williams Fund to cover the expense of having the wood floors in the sanctuary repaired and refinished and seconded by Darden Barrett. The motion was approved unanimously.
- The fire suppression inspection and hood cleaning was completed.
- Jay took the old chimney cap to Sims Recycling and received $58.00 for it. The new cap has been installed.
- Parts needed to complete the conversion from oil to gas should be in the end of May. The water heater for the pipes has approximately 70-80 gallons of oil remaining. This will be converted to gas as well.
Committee Reports
The Invite Task Force will meet Wednesday, May 17, 2023 at 6:00 p.m.
Old Business
A Motion was made by Ron Kindley to ratify the electronic vote that was passed unanimously, allowing Linda Curtis to roll over a CD that had reached maturity into a new 42 month CD earning 4% and was seconded by Jay Hogg. The motion was approved unanimously.
