Doug Miller, Senior Warden, called the vestry of St. John’s Episcopal Church, Elizabeth City Parish, to order on May 17, 2016 at 6:35pm. Present were members Doug Miller, David Edmonson, Ann Templeman, Mary Pat Croft, Bettyrene Pope, The Reverend Mark Riley, and Val Bowen. Absent from the meeting were Bill Brown, The Reverend Samantha Vincent-Alexander, Rose Hobart, Duncan Garnett, Treasurer Linda Curtis and youth representative, Will Olson.
Doug began the meeting with a Bible reading. Minutes from the April meeting were reviewed and corrections made. David made a motion to approve the minutes as amended, Mary Pat seconded the motion and it was approved.
Treasurer’s Report
Doug reviewed the financials from April. Pledged income and non-pledged income is significantly behind. There will be an article about the situation on the front page of the next epistle. Communication efforts will be explored to reach out to parishioners to see why their pledges are down. The renter in Hoffman House fell through.
Rector’s Report (Doug)- Samantha’s first Sunday back will be May 22nd. Everyone was reminded of the vestry retreat and to make sure you can attend.
Asst. Rector Report- Sign-ups have begun for Stop Hunger Now. Summer lunch program is beginning. Two Bible studies are being offered: one in the afternoon and one in the evening. Christian Education is continuing with the Forum on the Bible. Mark has gotten the video security cameras working and the electronic handicapped door working.
Jr. Warden Report
Roof repair- slate repairs have been made; rotten wood in the corner was found and replaced. Bettyrene made a motion for up to $2000.00 more for the roof repair on the 1728 building and asking the Endowment Board to cover those expenses. Bettyrene made the motion and Doug seconded it and it was approved. Bettyrene will talk to Danny about the $2000.00
Sr. Warden Report Finance Committee-there were two vacancies, one was filled with Warren Coleman. Steve Rous has expressed interest in serving on boards. Doug made a motion to ask Steve to serve on the Finance Committee, Val seconded the motion and it was approved. Doug will ask Steve on Sunday.
Doug ended the meeting with thanking Mark for filling in so beautifully for Samantha during her leave. He was commended for doing such a great job.
The meeting was closed with prayer and we adjourned at 7:30 pm.
