Vestry Meeting, June 13, 2000

Tuesday, June 13, 2000

The regular meeting of the vestry of St. John’s Church, Elizabeth City Parish, Hampton, VA was held on June 13, 2000. The Reverend Richard L. Vinson, Interim Rector, called the meeting to order at 7:00 PM.

Those present were Richard Hayes, Vestal Lewis, Frank Edgar, Sr., Lew Vermillion, Leo Vaisvil, Marian Blount, Keith Hatch, Linda Eanes, Mary Ellen Sawyer, Hansi Haufler, Nelson T. Durden, Bob Harper, and Billie Einselen.

Absent: Dan Clark

Devotions were given by Rick Vinson.

Election of Vestry officers. The following persons were elected:

Frank Edgar, Sr. Lew Vermillion Nelson T. Durden P. Warren Spratley

Senior Warden Junior Warden Registrar Treasurer

Financial Reports. The St. John’s Income & Expense Statement for the month ending May 31, 2000; Special Reports & Hoffman House Report were all distributed and discussed. The bank balance is $36,522.36 as of June 13, 2000.

The minutes of the regular vestry meeting held on May 16, 2000 were approved as corrected.

Interim Rector’s Report: There will be no regular vestry meeting in July 2000. There will be a regular vestry meeting in August 2000 unless notified otherwise. On behalf of the 2010 Committee, Mr. Vinson reported that moneys can now be received for cemetery beautification and $1,050.00 has already been received. He further reported that final plans for plantings in the cemetery are being developed. He also reported that Camp Wakonda funds have been approved in the name of St. John’s. Camp Wakonda is a camp for children who have AIDS or children who have family members who have AIDS. The funds are from the discretionary fund. Mr. Vinson further reported that persons who will be helping Habitat for Humanity will be at St. John’s from July 30, 2000 through August 5, 2000.

Old Business: Mr. Vinson reported that Jane Heiby’s resignation from the vestry has been received and he will respond on behalf of the vestry. It was decided not to fill the vacancy.

Re-visit Mission Statement: After much discussion a motion was made and passed that the following statement be the Mission statement for St. John’s Church: “Historic St. John’s Church strives to glorify God and to bring people to Jesus Christ by enriching the spiritual life of our Parish and the greater community.”

Commission Design: After lengthy discussion, a motion was made and passed that the vestry adopt the attached vestry organizational structure. Five vestry members will be involved with the work of each division of the new organizational structure. Vestry members present were given an opportunity to sign up for one of the three divisions.

Horseman Building: An appraisal for the building has been completed and discussions are on-gomg.

Parish House Ramp update: St. John’s is still trying to get an estimate of the cost to install the ramp.

Other Business: Marian Blount asked the Junior to examine the air conditioning in the south chancel. Positive comments were made about the 10:30 AM Sunday service on June 11, 2000.
