The regular meeting of the vestry of St. John’s Church, Elizabeth City Parish, Hampton, VA was held on April 11, 2000. The Rev. Richard L. Vinson called the meeting to order at 7:00 PM and the registrar was present.
Those present were Billie Einselen, Frank Edgar, Connie Heath, Marian Blount, Keith Hatch, Dan Clark, Vestal Lewis, Richard Hayes, Lew Vermillion, Jane Heiby, Rick Harman, Nancy Adams, and Warren Spratley, Treasurer. Also present were Jim Tormey and Elaine Holt of the Search Committee.
Absent were Letia Drewry and Leo Vaisvil.
Billie Einselen gave devotions.
Review of Minutes and Agenda: The minutes of the March 14, 2000 meeting were approved. The agenda was reviewed.
Registrar’s Report: No report.
Wardens’ Report: Senior warden: no report.
Junior Warden: Lew Vermillion reported the work on the roof of the Church should begin next week. The gate at the Hoffman House has been fixed and there is still some touchup painting to be completed. There is a leak in the roof of the Hoffman House. The Parish House clock isn’t working and needs to be repaired. Jane Heiby donated a microwave oven to the Parish House.
Search Committee Report: Jim Tormey and Elaine Holt reviewed the parish survey form, cover letter, and registration form. Vestry members suggested some changes.
Interim’ s Report: Rick Vinson has given each vestry member a copy of last year’s parochial report. Robert Claiborne is working on proposals for a ramp into the Parish House. Bishop’s Day is April 15, 2000 and the Bishop’s focus is missioning, both nationally and internationally. The Vestry retreat is June 2 and 3 at the Well and John Eidam will be the facilitator. The Mission Statement needs to be reviewed. Rick will be at Notre Dame the second week of May and will be on vacation June 23 – July 14, 2000. Betty Long will be the supply clergy.
Treasurer’s Report: The bank balance as of April 11 is $42,066.80. The Income and Expense Statement for the month of March was handed out. Warren Spratley will check on the amount of the pension fund (81.4% for the year). The Special Accounts Report and Income and Expense report for the Hoffman House was handed out.
The Endowment Fund grew by 21.3% last year and donated $5,000 to the Cemetery Fund.
Other Business: The old commission system and a new model were discussed. The interim period would be a good time to change systems, knowing that the new clergy might change it again.
The Annual Meeting is May 7, 2000. The Fellowship Commission will fix breakfast and the Vestry should help host the breakfast. There will be reports from the Senior Warden, Search Committee, and a “State of the Church” by Rick Vinson. If a vestry member has served two or more years, he must sit off for one year. Rick encouraged vestry members to wait a couple of years before standing for re-election. The differences of voting by plurality vs. majority were discussed and it was agreed to elect by plurality, the top five vote receivers being elected.
The new EYC advisors are Kim and Devin Hensley. They do not want a salary and it was moved that that money be used for scholarships for EYC members. The motion was seconded and approved.
