The vestry of St. John’s Episcopal Church, Elizabeth City Parish, was called to order on January 17, 2023 at 6:30 pm. Present were: Senior Warden Jay Hogg, Treasurer Linda Curtis, Anne Abraham, Bill Beach, Jim Klotz, Doug Perry, Bettyrene Pope, Elizabeth Zimmerman, The Reverend Mark Riley, The Reverend Samantha Vincent-Alexander. Absent: Dan Clark and Lynn Kirkland.
The meeting opened at 6:30 pm with a reading from 1 Corinthians 1:10-18.
Treasurer’s Report – Linda Curtis
Linda presented a budget for 2023. After some discussion and questions Doug Perry moved that we adopt the budget as presented. The motion was seconded by Bettyrene Pope. The motion carried.
Linda reported that we had received more donations than usual. Jay Hogg moved that we send a one time gift of $5000 to the Diocese. The motion was seconded by Bill Beach. The motion carried.
Approval of Minutes: The minutes of the November meeting were approved.
The 2022 Annual Report of St. John’s Charitable Trust was submitted to the Vestry of St. John’s Church.
Invite, Welcome, Connect discussion
Invite – Jay will investigate replacing some of our outside signs.
Bill will concentrate on updating our information of the Hampton city website.
Welcome – Bettyrene will investigate the purchase of a banner for the Queen’s Way brick wall and purchase name tags. Parishioners will be encouraged to wear them at the annual meeting.
Rector’s Report, The Reverend Samantha Vincent-Alexander
St. Mark’s – St. Mark’s is no longer meeting at St. John’s Church.
Annual Meeting Breakfast – The vestry will be responsible for the breakfast after the annual meeting.
We will plan on 70 people – 10 tables. Each member signed up for a task.
- Bettyrene – will purchase egg and cheese and egg and meat croissants from COSTCO.
- Jim and Anne will bring juice.
- Bill, Elizabeth, and Mark will bring cut up fruit.
- Doug will bring doughnuts.
- Bettyrene will decorate the tables.
The croissants will have to be thawed and placed on pans to be heated in the electric oven.
The vestry voted to have the February meeting on February 15th.
Continuing education for Samantha – Samantha will attend the Princeton Seminary Leadership program for women in May.
Nursery update – According to Safe Church we cannot have one adult and one 14 yr. old in the nursery without a third person present. Samantha will task Michael with the job of sitting on the bench by the nursery door when this situation arises.
Assistant Rector’s Report, The Reverend Mark Riley
Stop Hunger Now – packing of food will take place January 22nd in the Parish House after the 11:00 service.
Blood Drive at St. John’s will take place on February 14th.
Warden Reports
Senior Warden – Jay asked that all vestry members submit committee reports to assist him with his report at the annual meeting.
Junior Warden – Bettyrene reported on the many maintenance projects that have been completed or are in progress. Among them are a test of the sprinkler system, installation of emergency exit signs in the parish house, walls around the cemetery pressure washed, new yearly contract with Warwick Mechanical for $3674.00, many leaks in the restrooms, ongoing adjustment of heating systems, and updating new internet phone system.
St. John’s will furnish food for Night’s Welcome on January 19th.
Committee Reports
Outreach – Doug reported that there will be an Outreach Committee meeting on January 24th in the Parish House. All are welcome and encouraged to attend.
