The Vestry of St. John’s Episcopal Church, Elizabeth City Parish, was called to order on May 15, 2018 at 6:30 pm. Present were members Ruth Simmons , Stephen Rous, The Reverend Samantha Vincent-Alexander, The Reverend Mark Riley, Pat Dennehey, Senior Warden Bob Harper, Rosemary Hobart, Whiting Chisman Jr., youth representative Darius Rowe and Duncan Garnett .
The Reverend Mark Riley opened with a scripture reading from Acts.
Check In and Absences Bill Brown absent.
Jim Shoemaker provided the Vestry with the Annual Tax Report of the Mary Williams Trust.
Minutes were discussed and corrections made.
Treasurer’s Report
Linda Curtis reported the following Treasurer Report:
- Year to date Actual Income is more than Budgeted Income.
- April’s Actual Income is more than April’s Budgeted Income.
- Received 1st Quarter reimbursement from Mary Williams Trust as well as the Endowments annual contribution. Also received some miscellaneous income from Hoffman House.
- Expense up a little. Paid 2nd Quarter Diocesan Pledge and paid 2nd Quarter of Property and Liability Insurance. Incurred some other expenses related to Office Equipment Maintenance and Software charges.
- Non Pledge Actual Income more than Budgeted Income.
- Disbursed funds to the Diocese of Jerusalem for donations from Ash Wednesday, Maundy Thursday and Good Friday Services.
- Miscellaneous expenses for Craft Guild, Night’s Welcome, and Memorial Fund.
- Moved money from the Nickerson Trust to operating budget for Outreach.
- Received a credit from ET Lawson for March Heating Oil Deliveries.
- Will be moving the money collected from the Easter Offering to the Parish Family Assistance Fund.
- Two bids have been sent out for Annual Audit. Dixon has replied so far.
Rector’s Report
Reverend Samantha Vincent-Alexander reported the following:
- Need to reschedule Vestry Retreat. Looking at August 24 and 25. Will look at some place in Williamsburg.
- Will need help to man the beer and wine tent at the Hampton Block Party on June 16th. The young adults will man the 2nd shift. Rosemary Hobart, Bob Harper, and Ruth Simmons have volunteered to help during 1st shift.
- Need to elect delegates for 2020 Annual Council. They will be the alternates for the 2019 Annual Council. Phyllis Henry and Darden Barrett were mentioned as possible delegates for 2020
- With the death of Vestry member Lloyd Thomas discussion centered on election of a new Vestry member to fulfill a 1 year term. Several names were brought forth. Duncan Brown moved that the Nominations be closed which was seconded by Whiting Chisman Jr. Motion passed. After further discussion Rosemary Hobart moved to nominate Charlie Edmonson to fulfill the remainder of the year left vacated by Lloyd Thomas’s death. Stephen Rous seconded. Vote was called and motion passed.
- Calvin has stepped down as our Sexton. Several candidates are being considered. An interim cleaning crew has been hired for the normal cleaning tasks. Other responsibilities of the Sexton need to be picked up by Vestry Members. Senior Warden Bob Harper will send out a sign up sheet.
Assistant Rector’s Report
Reverend Mark Riley reported the following:
- Information passed out concerning St. John’s involvement with Habitat for Humanity ground breaking on May 30, 2018. Vestry members were asked to sign waivers for their future involvement during the construction phase of this project.
- Rise Against Hunger is moving forward. We are half way there in raising the funds to participate in this project which is after the 9:15 service on July 15, 2018.
- Asking for the Vestry to participate and serve during the Summer Lunch Program.
Junior Warden Report
Junior Warden Whiting Chisman Jr. reported the following:
- Renovation is going well.
- Met with Earl Lawson of ET Lawson concerning the cost we are paying for heating oil. His recommendation was to go with PAPCO. Meeting with Bettyrene Pope and Linda Curtis for further discussion.
Senior Warden Report
Senior Warden Bob Harper reported the following:
- The Downtown Hampton Development Partnership is embarking on a campaign to help beautify the downtown area by painting murals on certain buildings. The DHDP has asked if St. John’s might be willing to put a mural on the wall of the Hoffman House facing Franklin St. After some discussion it was recommended to table this until we can find out what costs would be associated with this project.
Vestry Liaison Reports
Inreach: Asking for help on setting up tables for the church picnic on June 3rd.
Outreach: Still looking for one more to help with ministry to St. Paul.
New Business
Reverend Mark Riley led us in Compline.
