Prior to our vestry retreat a short business meeting was called to discuss and vote on a couple of issues. Doug Miller, Senior Warden, called the vestry of St. John’s Episcopal Church, Elizabeth City Parish, to order on August 28, 2015 at 6:50pm. Present were members Doug Miller, David Edmonson, Ann Templeman, The Reverend Samantha Vincent-Alexander, Mary Pat Croft, Linda Curtis, and Bettyrene Pope. Absent from the meeting were George Cornwell, Dan Clark, Kevin Eley, Val Bowen and Youth representatives Thomas Miller and Jess Miller.
Drainage off the roof Pembroke has given an estimate of $13,476 to install a French drain system using Q-design’s specifications. Bettyrene moved to accept Pembroke’s bid subject to Q-design’s specifications, Linda Curtis seconded, all approved and no one was opposed. Bettyrene then moved to ask the Mary Williams Trust to pay for the drainage system; Doug amended the motion to add that the work would not be done if Mary Williams Trust did not agree to pay for it. Linda Curtis seconded it and the motion was approved.
Part-time assistant Since Emmanuel cannot afford the part-time assistant, it has been presented to us to have Mark Riley on a full-time basis for a year. The diocese can pay his salary the first six months. He will still be a deacon. St. John’s will pay the second 6 months, he will be ordained then. Linda, Bettyrene, Doug and Samantha met with Mark and all gave very favorable reviews. Samantha is hoping he can help with adult formation, youth formation, confirmation and a weekly Bible study in the evening. A Letter of Agreement will be drawn-up specifying it is a one year commitment. The Bishop will write a letter to the Parish explaining the situation. Doug made a motion to pay up to $24,000 to cover half the salary of Mark Riley as an intern assistant rector. Linda seconded it, all were in favor.
