Vestry Meeting, June 17, 2014

Charles Edmonson, Senior Warden, called the vestry of St. John’s Episcopal Church, Elizabeth City Parish to order at 6:30pm other members present were Linda Curtis, Treasurer, Kay Olson, registrar, Doug Miller, Valerie Bowen, Ann Templeman, Sylvia Edgar, Vestal Lewis, George Cornwell, and Thomas Templeman. Clergy Present Reverend Samantha Vincent-Alexander. Also present Joyce Luenstroth, absent were Junior Warden Dan Clark and Kevin Eley. George Cornwell led the opening with prayer and reflection and read Psalm 144. Joyce Luenstroth spoke on her observations as a newer member of the congregation that St. John’s needs to be more visible in the community. She then asked each member present to state a hobby or talent he/she has. Joyce then suggested a Talent show or fair to mobilize the talents of the parishioners and invite the community to this show of talents. Joyce would like to chair a committee for an event to be held in the fall and could tie in with stewardship campaign. The vestry does support the event. Joyce will look into forming a committee and choose a date for the event. Doug Miller made a motion to approve the minutes of the last meeting, second by Vestal Lewis Motion passed. Treasurer’s report: Linda Curtis asked approval of two new accounts line items #2 and #3 in the restricted accounts account. A motion made by Valerie Bowen and seconded by Thomas Templeman to accept the new line items passed. Samantha has written a letter to remind those parishioners who are behind in pledges to please try to get up to date on their pledges. Rector’s report: Samantha Vincent-Alexander reported a new Parish Administrator has been hired. A joint dedication and pilgrimage service will on June 22 with a reception. Vestry to bring fruit trays to share and a cake will be purchased. Samantha will be out of town on the pilgrimage from June 22 thru July 1. She will then be on vacation July 2 thru July 11. A Supply Priest will be hired for the service on June 29 and Charlie Edmonson will lead a Morning Prayer service July 6. Vestry was called into Executive Session at 8:05pm, motion made by Linda Curtis and seconded by Vestal Lewis Vestry was called back in session at 8:20pm, motion by Linda Curtis seconded by Valerie Bowen. We will continue to have the one (summer) Sunday service at 9:30am. A reception for Bettyrene Pope will be held after the service on July 27. There is no vestry meeting in July.
