- The Vestry met on June 12 with nine Vestry members present and the Reverend Skip Hutton. The Reverend Donna-Mae Siderius presided.
- The checking account balance as of June 12 was $27,497.80.
- May income was $48,770.56 and expenses were $36,128.51. With 42% of the year complete, total income and expenses are on target. Pledge income is at 36.40%.
- Vestry voted to deposit any future undesignated bequests received into the Memorial Fund, for decision on disbursement later. An undesignated bequest in the amount of $5,000 was received from the estate of Katherine Montague Simmons Flory in May.
- St. John’s received 25,500 shares of Sun Trust Bank stock, worth about $2.4 million, from the estate of Lucille Williams. Ms. Williams was not a member of St. John’s, but was a friend of the Edgars. She loved our church and is buried in the church cemetery. This bequest will net the church about $74,000 per year and is restricted to use by the elderly and the needy of St. John’s and the Diocese of Southern Virginia. We are waiting for more specific stipulations.
- Vestry voted to disburse $9,400 from the Nickerson Fund, a restricted memorial fund, to 12 organizations, including St. Paul’s College, which did not receive any diocesan support this year due to budget constraints.
- The quarterly interest income from the Edward and Mary Williams Trust was received and applied to the line of credit for the Williams Hall renovations, which reduces our interest payment by about half. We expect this debt to be paid in full by June 2008.
- The Journey to Adulthood (J2A) group raised all the money needed for their pilgrimage on their own, without tapping into the money left over from the last J2A group. The J2A class, Donna- Mae and three teachers, will be in Belize June 16- 25.
- St. John’s will join the Hampton City Schools Faith and School Partnership for the purpose of “increasing academic achievement, enhancing the learning environment, and increasing community involvement in our schools.” Volunteers will be recruited by parishioner Greta Harrison, who agreed to take the lead on this project. Vestry recommended that we partner with a Title I school.
- John Chiasson, Junior Warden has been, and always is, very busy maintaining our buildings and property.
- Skip Hutton is preparing for his lecture series on the history of St. John’s by going through the church archives. The series will resume in September.
- Donna-Mae participated in the retirement ceremony of Colonel Linda McMahon; the National Maritime Day with Kevin Eley, and will participate in the unveiling of Nelson Durden’s judicial portrait when she returns from Belize.
- Due to unforeseen circumstances, Vacation Bible School has been cancelled. Other churches in the area are willing to accept our children. A list will be published in the Sunday bulletins.
- John Siderius will participate in a youth music camp in Williamsburg the second week of July. Our youth are encouraged to attend.
- Kathy Dansey, Director, Christian Education, resigned effective July 6 to take a position as Literacy Specialist with Head Start. Kathy brought many gifts and talents to St. John’s over the past 13 years, which will serve her well in her new position. A celebration of her ministry, with a reception following, will be held on Sunday, July 8.
- A sub-committee of the Vestry, formed in May to explore retaining a consultant to analyze opportunities for youth involvement at St. John’s, will work with Win Lewis and Caroline Black of the Diocese.
- A Celebration of New Ministry will be held for the Reverend Susan Copley on June 29 at her new parish, Christ Church, in Tarrytown, New York.
- The Diocese is beginning the search process for a new Bishop. Convocation V will meet on June 21 at Bruton Parish to elect one lay person and one clergy person to be part of an election membership pool, from which the Nomination and New Ministry Committees will be formed.
- The Vestry thanks all the youth who participated in Youth Sunday; the participants in the service and Shubert Mass on June 10, especially the musicians; the volunteers who organized the wonderful picnic; Baxter Simmons for his catering skills; and David Foster, for his technical skills in restoring computer service.
- There were about 256 people in church on June 10 for the Shubert Mass, including musicians, and over 200 people attended the picnic. It was a great day!
- Vestry Tacky Light was passed from Charlie Edmonson to Chuck Zimmerman. The Mission Tacky Light was kept by Whit McKinney for another month. These members will pray for the Vestry and for Mission until the next Vestry meeting on July 10.
