The regular monthly meeting of St. John’s Church, Elizabeth City Parish, Hampton, Virginia, was held on February 14, 2006, with The Very Reverend Donna-Mae Siderius presiding.
Vestry members present were Greg Brauer, John Chiasson, Scott Curtis, Nelson Durden, Charles Edmonson, Ben Ferris, Bill Forinash, Bob Harper, Sr. Warden, Connie Heath, Treasurer, Whit McKinney, Kay Olson, Registrar, Sanford Pankin, Bettyrene Pope, Jr. Warden, and Bob Wind, absent was Charles Zimmerman. Retiring Vestry members present were Linda Curtis, Retiring Sr. Warden, Vestal Lewis, and Sandy Smith, Retiring Registrar.
Clergy present were The Very Reverend Donna-Mae Siderius and The Reverend Susan Copley.
The Very Reverend Donna-Mae Siderius introduced our guest speaker, The Reverend Canon Win Lewis.
Devotions and prayer were presented by Connie Heath.
Minutes of the January meeting will stand with one correction.
New Business
Election of Officers was held. New Officers for 2006 are as follows:
- Senior Warden Bob Harper
- Junior Warden Bettyrene Pope
- Treasurer Connie Heath
- Registrar Kay Olson
Action: The officers for 2006 are Senior Warden, Bob Harper, Junior Warden, Bettyrene Pope, Treasurer, Connie Heath, Registrar, Kay Olson
Donna-Mae announced Bishop’s Day for Vestries and Leaders will be held in this area on March 11,2006. Keynote speaker will be The Right Reverend Robert Hodges Johnson, the interim Bishop for the Diocese of Southern Virginia. She requested vestry members e-mail, call or drop off to the office the three workshops you are interested in attending. This information is to be gotten to her by February 24 so pre-registration may be sent in by the requested date of March 3.
We usually car-pool to this event.
The Endowment Board has requested Nelson Durden to become a member of the board to replace Gwen Cumming who is retiring. Motion was made and passed to admit Nelson Durden to the Endowment Board.
Action: Nelson Durden will replace Gwen Cumming as a member of the Endowment Board.
Assistant Rectors Report
Susan Copley gave out copies of the revised Vestry Care Groups for 2006. She encouraged all members to keep in touch with one’s team by informing them of upcoming events planned for St. John’s. We have had twelve (12) new households to become active this past year in our parish.
Treasurer’s Report
Connie Heath reported we are pretty much in line with the projected income percentages for this time of year. A copy of the Treasurer’s report will be attached to the minutes. The amount of $2,414.77 was the Christmas offering which well be split between H.E.L.P. and Youth Challenge. She has received a rider to be added to the insurance policy at a cost of $253.00 to cover acts of Terrorism, (Terrorism Insurance). Donna-Mae and the Senior Warden will review the information to see if we do need the extra insurance.
Vestry will vote either yes or no on Terrorism Insurance either on line or at a future meeting.
The Treasurers Report was approved as presented.
Program
The Reverend Canon Win Lewis presented our program “Mutual Ministry Cycle”. A Mutual Ministry review including baseline review, goals and priorities.
He began by asking us what the weather report for St. John’s has been like for the past few years. This discussion brought us into dialogue about high and low points in our parish and where we want to focus our attention in the future.
We looked at forming some working committees such as:
- Renovations to the church building-Bettyrene Pope, Greg Brauer, Charles Edmonson, and John Chiasson
- Diocesan Transition-Bob Harper, Bob Wind
- Membership-Sanford Pankin, Kay Olson
- The Four Hundredth Anniversary-Nelson Durden

Good of the Order
The Vestry Tacky Light was passed from Linda Curtis to Connie Heath. The Mission Tacky Light was passed from Ben Ferris to Scott Curtis.
The next meeting is March 14, 2006. Ben Ferris has devotions and refreshments.
