Special Meeting of the Vestry of St. John’s Church

Tuesday, November 5, 2002

A special meeting was held in the parish house of the vestry of St. John’s Church, Elizabeth City Parish, Hampton, Virginia on Tuesday, November 5, 2002 at 7:00 PM with Bob Harper, Senior Warden, presiding.

Vestry members present were: Nelson Durden, Frank Edgar, Sr., Bob Harper; Senior Warden, Hansi Haufler, Connie Heath; Treasurer, Bill Kirkland, Bill Mace, Elizabeth Phillips, Bettyrene Pope; Registrar, Mary Ellen Sawyer, and W. L. (Bill) Terrill. Absent were: Eric Stewart and Jim Shoemaker.

Also present were James “Skip” Hutton, Interim Rector, Bob Shuford, Whiting Chisman, Frear Hawkins, and John Gammel

The meeting was called to order by Bob Harper.

The purpose of the meeting was to discuss the contract proposal for the Horseman property with Mrs. Crocker’s changes and stipulations ..

Questions arose concerning limitations on rental of the space. John Gammel said the potential rental was $9-11 a square foot. This would be on the low side for rental space in downtown Hampton. There is a market. It is reasonable to expect to rent part of the building for the first three to five years. John left the meeting due to his family ties with the seller.

Comments guidance & recommendations were given by Whiting Chisman, Bob Shuford, and Frear Hawkins.

Bettyrene made a motion that we reject Mrs. Crocker’s offer and have Frear Hawkins draw up a new contract in the amount of $330,000 purchase price with necessary stipulations to protect the church’s interest. The motion was seconded. The vote was taken and the motion passed.

The Huttons have invited the staff, vestry, and their spouses to a get-together at their house in Norfolk on the evening of Sunday December 15th.

The meeting was adjourned.
