The regular meeting of the vestry of St. John’s Church, Elizabeth City Parish, Hampton, Virginia, was held at the Parish House on February 5, 2002. The Rev. Keith N. Adams, Rector, presiding.
Vestry members present were Marian Blount; Nelson T, Durden, Registrar; Billie Einselen, Senior Warden; Bob Harper; Hansi Haufler; Linda Lashley; Connie Heath, Treasurer; Vestal Lewis; Bill Mace; Bettyrene Pope; Mary Ellen Sawyer; Eric Stewart; W.L. (Bill) Terrill, Junior Warden; Keith N. Adams, Rector, and Richard Hayes.
Billie Einselen led devotions and Bill Mace provided dessert.
The minutes of the January 2002 regular meeting were approved as corrected.
The Rector gave pastoral notes.
The proposed FY2002 Operating Budget as recommended by the Finance Committee was presented. It was pointed out that, as requested, that this budget (totaling $386,000) was balanced; the estimated income was based primarily on pledges actually received, and that $15,000 was included for payment toward the Diocesan assessment ($70,000).
During a lively and lengthy discussion, it was noted that the total in FY2001 income was 432,351.79. It was generally agreed that 1.) This Vestry should adopt a program that reflects its confidence of growth during 2002; 2) that the planned program must include added emphasis on youth ministry (our first priority goal); and, 3) that we endeavor to honor our obligation to the Diocese. Accordingly, it was moved by Mace, seconded by Hayes, that an Operating Budget of $454,000 (5% increase over FY2001 income) be approved; that $35,000 be budgeted for the Diocesan assessment; and, that any funds received above budgeted income up to an additional $35,0000 be used first to pay the remainder of the Diocesan assessment of $70,000.00. The motion was passed.
It was also decided that the vestry must continue to take a pro-active roll in the 2002 budget process. To do so, vestry members will contact members of the congregation to thank those who have pledged for 2002 and see if they would consider increasing their pledge for this year. The vestry members would also contact those members of the congregation who have not pledge so far this year and ask them to please consider doing so.
TechRiders will be at St. John’s March 4,2002 through March 6, 2002; and the National Conference for Community and Justice will meet on February 21, 2002.
The St. John’s Episcopal Church Income and Expense Statement for the period ending January 31, 2002 was distributed and explained. A special accounts statement and Hoffman House account statement were also distributed and explained.
The next regular vestry meeting will be held on March 12, 2002 at 7:00 p.m. at the parish house and the next executive committee meeting will be on call.
The consolidated budget for 2002 will be published in the Epistle.
