The regular meeting of the vestry of St. John’s Church, Elizabeth City Parish, Hampton, Virginia was held at the parish house on November 13, 2001; the Rev. Keith N. Adams, Rector, presiding. The devotions were given by Hansi Haufler.
Vestry members present were Marian Blount; Nelson T. Durden, Registrar; Billie Einselen, Senior Warden; Bob Harper; Hansi Haufler; Richard Hayes; Connie Heath, Treasurer; Vestal Lewis; Bill Mace; Bettyrene Pope; Mary Ellen Sawyer; Eric Stewart; W.L. (Bill) Terrill, Junior Warden; Leo Vaisvil, and the Rev. Keith Adams, Rector.
Absent: Linda Lashley
Guest Present: Robert Shuford
The minutes of the October 2001 regular vestry meeting were approved as submitted.
Point of personal privilege – Robert Shuford gave a history of the St. John’s Endowment fund to November, 1977. Copies of the Articles of Incorporation of St. John’s Church Endowment Fund, Inc., were distributed.
Treasurer’s report: The treasurer reported the bank balance was $17,901.42 as of November 13th, 2001. She also distributed the St. John’s Income and Expense Statement for the month ending October 31, 2001, as well as Special accounts reports for the same period of time. There was explanation and discussion.
A resolution was made, seconded and passed that the church bank account be changed to a business account. See attachment.
The Stewardship Campaign report was given by Bob Harper, co-chairman, with Rick Harman of the Stewardship Campaign. He reported that the campaign goal is $600,000.00 and there will be a stewardship dinner on November 29, 2001. Information about this year’s campaign and pledge cards will be given out at the dinner to be followed by mailings. He also stated that stewardship needs to be headed by the vestry.
Blackiston Estate: The Rector reported that he has been in touch with Mr. Blackiston’s son who wants his father’s $5,000 bequest to St. John used to memorialize his mother and father. There was a discussion about the possibility of establishing a memorial garden in the name of Mr. & Mrs. Henry C. Blackiston. There was also further discussion about other uses of the bequest. A motion was made, seconded, and passed that the Senior Warden compile the various ideas for use of the bequest and report back to the vestry.
The Rector also reported that a letter has been received from Sue McLain thanking St. John’s for its hospitality.
Finally, the Rector stated that the Rev. Ross Wright who is Rector at the Church of the Good Shepherd, will be pursuing a doctorate.
Junior Warden’s Report: The Junior Warden reported that the freezer in the kitchen does not work and that it needs to be replaced. The tour of the church facilities will take place soon.
Rector’s Report: The Rector reported as follows, to-wit:
- a. The old cleaning crew has been terminated and a new cleaning person has been hired. Tommy Rowe is the new cleaning person and he has been hired for three months.
- b. The possible use of small group meetings was discussed.
- c. There will be a staff planning meeting on November 19, 2001.
- d. Kelley Riebel is the new communications secretary
- e. A telephone call has been received from the United Daughters of the Confederacy who want to have a service at St. John’s and place a wreath at the Confederate monument. The Rector will investigate further, and approve or disapprove the request.
Senior Warden’s Report: The Senior Warden reported that she has received a thank you note from the Keith Adams Family thanking the parish for the reception. She also received a thank you letter from the Rector’s mother. She then reported that she received a thank you letter from John Eidam thanking St. John’s for the check sent to him for his work as consultant for the search committee.
Lastly, she reported, Leo Vaisvil has resigned from the vestry effective immediately because he and his family are moving to the Richmond, Virginia area.
She also reported that Carol Gallagher is the new Suffragan Bishop for the Diocese of Southern Virginia.
She also mentioned that St. John’s was in the Daily Press on November 12, 2001.
Old Business: The proposed creation of a “Pastoral Care Committee/Commission” was discussed.
Chalice and paten loan to the Hampton History Museum Association was discussed. The vestry of St. John’s church has already taken a position on this matter as set forth in prior minutes of the vestry.
New Business: A hand-out referred to as “Some Budget Thoughts” was distributed by the Rector and discussed. The Rector wants a vestry member to speak on the subject “Why I Tithe.”
A motion was made, seconded and passed that Tommy Rowe, the new cleaning person, be authorized to purchase a new vacuum cleaner subject to the Rector’s approval.
A Night’s Welcome will be at St. John’s between December 15, 2001 and December 22, 2001, and members of St. John’s are needed to help with A Night’s Welcome.
There was a discussion of incorporating the 91st Psalm in the church services.
The relay for Life event will be June 7, 2002 and June 8, 2002.
The executive committee will meet on November 29, 2001 at noon and the next vestry meeting will be on December 11, 2001 at the parish house.
