The regular meeting of the vestry of St. John’s Church, Elizabeth City Parish, Hampton, VA was held on September 11, 2001 at the parish house; the Rev. Keith Adams, Rector, presiding. The Treasurer, Connie Heath, gave devotions.
Vestry members present were Marian Blount, Nelson T. Durden, Billie Einselen, Bob Harper, Hansi Haufler, Richard Hayes, Connie Heath, Vestal Lewis, Bill Mace, Bettyrene Pope, Mary Ellen Sawyer, Eric Stewart, W. L. (Bill) Terrill, and Leo Vaisvil
Absent: Linda Lashley
The Rector gave a pastoral care report on several parishioners.
The Treasurer’s report was given by the Treasurer, Connie Heath, who reported a bank balance of $16,410.51 as of September 11th, 2001. St. John’s income and expense statement for the month ending August 31st 2001, Special Accounts Statement, and the Hoffman House were distributed. There was general discussion. The Treasurer then asked if Marni Schneider, the immediate past Interim Rector, is to be paid for two weeks after she stopped work? The Senior Warden, Billie Einselen, and Rector are to make an inquiry. A general discussion then followed on the low bank balance. The Treasurer advised the vestry that St. John’s is still paying the Rev. Betty Long for 10 hours per week and for the Sundays she works. After a discussion the Rector stated that he would like to increase her hours to 15 hours per week, for a salary of $1,800.00 per month. A motion was made, seconded, and passed that St. John’s hire the Rev. Betty Long for 15 hours per week for $1,800.00 per month conditional upon the Rector on behalf of St. John’s Church negotiating an agreement with the Rev. Betty Long – the terms of which agreement are to be submitted to the vestry for approval at the regular October 2001 vestry meeting.
Rector’s report – The Rector commented on the pastoral needs of the parish and that he is getting a handle on matters. He has had discussions with the staff about their job description. He also announced that Elizabeth Phillips is resigning effective upon a replacement being found.
Junior Warden’s report: The report was given by Bill Terrill, Junior Warden, who reported that he, the Rector, and three or four other parish members are going to tour the physical facilities of St. John’s to look at things that may need to be done. For example, damage to the parish house bell tower area, windows on the stage, etc.
Billie Einselen, as the Senior Warden, reported that the Rev. Keith Adams will be installed as the Rector of St. John’s Church, Elizabeth City Parish, Hampton, VA on October 18th, 2001 at 7:00PM. She also thanked the vestry for its help at the reception for the Rector and his family on September 9th, 2001. She also stated that we have received a thank you note from John Eidam for the $1,000.00 bonus that was given to him by St. John’s for his work as search committee consultant. Lastly, she commented on the excellent work done by Debbie Williams and her committee.
Old Business — Mary Ellen Sawyer stated that the Church Building and parish house need to be cleaned.
New Business – Keith Adams distributed a list of First Impressions which was explained and discussed. He stated that there is an immediate need for the following items, to-wit:
- 2 computers $1,700.00 each
- Network 600.00
- Digital Camera 300.00
- Specialty Software: Pagemaker 500.00 – new/ 80.00 – upgrade; Front Page 100.00
A motion was made, seconded, and passed that the vestry appropriate $3,000.00 at this time from the perpetual honor account to pay a part of the cost of these items and that the balance be referred to the finance committee for a recommendation as to how to pay for the balance of the cost of these items. The Rector also stated he would try to raise the balance through a special solicitation from the congregation. The Rector states that St. John’s also needs high speed internet/e-mail access ($40.00/month), website space ($8.00/month), and a website name – www.stjohn-hampton.org ($70.00 for two years).
Keith Adams also wants permission to start interviewing persons for staff positions.
At the request of the Rector a motion was made, seconded, and passed that St. John’s obtain a credit card account.
There was then a discussion of the church budgetary process and the organization of the parish.
The vestry is to ask the finance committee to have an asking budget for 2002 prepared for the October, 2001 regular vestry meeting.
The vestry referred to the executive committee the task of finding a stewardship chairperson for 2001-2002.
