The regular meeting of the vestry of St. John’s Church, Elizabeth City Parish, Hampton, VA was held on December 12, 2000. The Reverend Richard L. Vinson, Interim Rector, called the meeting to order at 7:00 PM.
Those present were Vestal Lewis, Frank Edgar, Sr., Leo Vaisvil, Marian Blount, Linda Eanes, Billie Einselen Keith Hatch, Mary Ellen Sawyer, Hansi Haufler, Nelson T. Durden, Lew Vermillion and Bob Harper.
Absent: Dan Clark and Richard Hayes. Rick Vinson gave devotions.
Guests: Molly Durden, Co-Chairperson of the 400th Anniversary Celebration Committee; Rick Harmon, Chairman of the Finance Committee and Co-Chairperson of the Finance Committee of the 400th Anniversary Celebration Committee; Ann Ward, Co-Chairperson of the Finance Committee of the 400th Anniversary Celebration Committee; and the Reverend Marni Schneider.
Members of the 400th Anniversary Celebration Committee who were present were introduced. The vestry was advised that Bill and Marjorie Mace would be the co-liaisons of the 400th Anniversary Celebration Committee. Rick Vinson offered Anniversary Celebration Committee a prayer for the commission of the 400th. A motion was made, seconded, and passed that the Steering Committee of the 400th Anniversary Celebration Committee be expanded to include the Junior Warden.
Molly and Nelson Durden thanked Rick Vinson for his great and much contribution to the establishment and formation of the Celebration Committee.
Frank Edgar introduced the Reverend Marni Schneider, who is being considered as the Interim Rector of St. John’s Church when the Reverend Richard Vinson leaves. There was a question and answer period and general discussion. Marni Schneider said she would be able to work a 30-hour week.
There was no report from the Search Committee except that the Committee had closed the receiving of names as of November 30, 2000.
After Marni Schneider left the meeting there was further discussion about calling her as Interim Rector when Rick Vinson leaves. There was also a discussion about hiring another minister to assist Marni Schneider for 10 hours a week.
A motion was made, seconded, and passed that St. John’s Church call Marni Schneider as Interim Rector when Rick Vinson leaves.
Rick Harmon gave the Finance Committee report. St. John’s Income and Expense Statement for the month ending November 30, 2000 and the proposed budget for 2001 were distributed and discussed in great detail. Mr. Harmon explained the proposed budget for 2001. The 2001 budget will be considered at the January 2001 regular vestry meeting. A motion was made, seconded, and passed that St. John’s Diocesan pledge for 2001 remain the same as it was for 2000. Mr. Harmon also gave the Finance Committee report on the Hoffman House roof replacement and air conditioner replacement. A motion was made, seconded, and passed that the roof and air conditioning be replaced for an amount not to exceed $45,000.00 (Roof-$33,000, Air Conditioner-$12,000.) and that the Vestry ask the St. John’s Endowment Fund for the funds.
Horseman Building report was giving by Mr. Harmon on behalf of the Finance Committee. He reported that St. John’s still had an offer for the sale of the building from the owner that was good until December 2?1\ 2000. He also gave the Vestry further information about the financial cost of purchasing the building. Mr. Harmon lastly reported that the Finance Committee supports the motion passed at the regular November 2000 vestry meeting which delegated to the Executive Committee and Finance Committee the authority to ascertain the probability of raising additional funds to purchase the Horseman Building. These funds would go along with funds that St. John’s Church would appropriate to purchase the Horseman Building.
The minutes of the November 2000 regular Vestry meeting were approved as mailed.
Interim Rector’s Report: Mr. Vinson submitted has resignation as Interim Rector of St. John’s Church, Hampton, VA, effective December 31, 2000. (See Attachment) A motion was made, seconded, and passed that the Vestry accept with deepest regret, the resignation of Richard Vinson as Interim Rector of St. John’s Church, Hampton, VA
The results of the Mission and Ministry P.A.C. Meeting of December 5, 2000 were filed. (See Attachment)
